When the gates were flung open at the Australian Open today, organizers were confident a global economic recession would do little to keep record crowds away. Like the other three gems in tennis' Grand Slam quartet, the Australian Open has seen its stature and attendance soar since the dawn of the professional era in 1968, particularly in the last two decades.
